Alchevsky is born in Kharkiv. After graduating from gymnasium he studies at Kharkiv University. At first Ivan is taught to sing by his brother, afterwards — in Paris.

In 1901-1905 Ivan Alchevsky is a soloist at Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg. He frequently participates in the so-called Russian Seasons in Paris. In 1919-1914 he sings at the Bolshoi Theater in Moscow.

Rare in its beauty and range (heroic tenor), Alchevsky’s voice always attracts attention. He is invited to perform at many opera houses, and tours a lot all over the world. the singer’s repertoire includes heroic, epic, dramatic and lyrical parties, in particular those of Sabinin (Ivan Susanin by Mikhail Glinka), Jose (Carmen by Bizet), and others. Though, the party of Herman from the Queen of Spades by Pyotr Tchaikovsky is considered to be Alchevsky’s visiting card.

Antonovych is born into a family of distinguished Ukrainian historian Volodymyr Antonovych. At first he studies at the University of Kyiv, then at the University of Kharkiv. Dmytro Antonovych is one of the founders of the Revolutionary Board of Kharkiv Student Hromada. He emigrates to Austria-Hungary in 1902, and returns home in 1905. the same year he becomes one of the leaders of the newly formed Ukrainian Social Democratic Labour Party. Since 1912 he teaches art history at Kyiv Art School, and collaborates with the monthly Dzvin and Siaivo.

On March 1917, when the Central Council is founded, Dmytro Antonovych is elected its Deputy Chairman. After the proclamation of the Fourth Universal of the Central Council he is the Secretary General for maritime affairs. Under the Directory, he heads the diplomatic mission in Rome. In exile, Dmytro Antonovych is one of the organizers of Ukrainian Free University in Vienna and Prague. He works as Director of the Museum of Struggle for Independence in Prague for many years.

In 1909 Aseev graduates from Kursk realschule, then studies at Moscow Institute of Commerce, and at the School of History and Philology of Moscow University, and the School of History and Philology of Kharkiv University. During 1917-1921 he works as a journalist in the Far EaSt. Aseev’s writings are first published in 1913.

His early works are influenced by symbolism, later — futurism. Revolutionary motives becomes stronger in his poetry influenced by his military service, and participation in establishing the Soviet power in the Far East.

In 1922 the poet moves to Moscow. According to the socialist realism canons, his works of 1930-1940s depict images of “the renewed world”. Philosophic motives predominate in Aseev’s later poems.

Nikolai Aseev is author of short stories, essays, memoirs, articles on vering, translated Taras Shevchenko’s and Pavlo Tychyna’s works into Russian.

Barabashov is born in Kharkiv. After graduation from the First Kharkiv gymnasium he is enrolled in the School of Physics and Mathematics of the University of Dorpat (Yuryev), but due to tuberculosis has to quit his studies to move for Italy. On returning from abroad, Nikolai Barabashov enters the School of Physics and Mathematics of Kharkiv University, which he graduates from in 1919. the scientist works at the Astronomical Laboratory. From 1930 to his death Nikolai Barabashov is the Director of the Astronomical Observatory of Kharkiv University, and since 1933 he is also the Head of the Department of Astronomy. In 1943-1945 he is Kharkiv University President.

Barabashov’s major scientific works are devoted to studying the planets and the Moon. He makes photographic photometry of Mars, which allows to determine its optical characteristics. Furthermore, Barabashov works with Nikolai Ponomariov to construct the first Soviet spectrohelioscope; he is the editor and one of the authors of the first Atlas of the Other Side of the Moon.

Nikolai Barabashov heads the Commission on Planetary Physics of Astronomical Council of the USSR Academy of Sciences, works within the Commission on Studies of Conditions on the Moon, and Other Planets, is a member of the International Astronomical Union, and the Chairman of the USSR Astronomical Council. In 1941 he is awarded the title of Merited Science Worker of the Ukrainian SSR, in 1969 he received a title of Hero of Socialist Labor. A minor planet and a crater on Mars are named in his honor. the Presidium of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine establishes Barabashov Prize.

Bar’yakhtar is born in Mariupol. In 1948-1951 he studies at Leningrad University. In 1953 he graduates from Kharkiv University. In 1954-1973 he works at Kharkiv Institute of Physics and Technology of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR.

In 1975-1978 is the Deputy Director of Donetsk Institute for Physics and Technology of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR. In 1982-1985 he heads a division of the Institute of Theoretical Physics of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR. In 1985-1989 he heads a division at the Institute of Metal Physics of the Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. Since 1985 he heads a department at Taras Shevchenko State University of Kyiv. In 1982-1989 Bar’yakhtar is the Secretary of the Division of Physics and Astronomy of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR. Since 1990 he is the Vice-President of the Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.

Bar’yakhtar is author of more than 500 scientific works on the theory of magnetism, physics of metals, plasma physics, superconductivity. Together with other scientists he discoveres magnetic acoustic resonance, and the intermediate state in antiferromagnetic substances. He is laureate of four State Prizes of the Ukrainian SSR, Sinelnikov prizes, Krylov prizes, and Bogolyubov prizes. the scientist is the Merited Worker of Science and Technology of Ukraine. In 2000 he is awarded the title of Doctor Honoris Causa of Kharkiv University.

Bedzyk is born in Vilhivka village of Sanok County (now Poland). He studies at an agricultural specialized school in Dnipropetrovsk region, in 1924 he graduates from Kharkiv Institute of Public Education. Dmytriy Bedzyk is a member of the Organization of Rural Writers Pluh, and the literary organization Western Ukraine. He works as agronomist, teacher, journaliSt. He is the Director of Korsun-Shevchenkovskiy Museum of Military Glory.

During the Great Patriotic War, Bedzyk is a special correspondent of the newspaper Soviet Ukraine, and is awarded orders of Friendship of Peoples, Honor Badge, and USSR medals.

Bedzyk publishes his first works in 1924. He is author of plays, essays, short stories, and novels about the October revolution (1917), socialism into rural areas of the USSR, Soviet people heroism in their struggle against the German-fascist invaders.

Since 1939 Dmytriy Bedzyk is a member of the Union of Writers of the USSR.

Beletsky receives his higher education at the School of History and Philology of Kharkiv Imperial University. In 1912-1914 he works at Kharkiv University, and since 1936 — at Taras Shevchenko Institute of Literature of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR. Beletsky is an academician of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR, and the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, the Vice-President of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR.

the scientist works are devoted to the theory and methodology of creative writing, and literary criticism; history and theory of Ukrainian, Russian and foreign literature; studies of works of Ukrainian and foreign writers.

Beloded is born in Uspenskoe village (Kirovohrad oblast, Ukraine). He graduates from a pedagogical vocational school, and then works as a teacher in a rural school. In 1932 he graduates from Kharkiv Institute of Public Education. At different times Beloded works at higher educational institutions of Kharkiv, and Lviv. He participates in the Great Patriotic War.

In 1961 he heads the Institute of Linguistics. In 1952-1957 he heads the Division of Social Sciences of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, in 1957-1962 he is the Minister of Education of the Ukrainian SSR. Since 1963 he is the Vice-President of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR, Head of the Ukrainian Committee of Slavists, and a member of the International Committee of Slavists. Beloded is a deputy of the Supreme Soviet of the Ukrainian SSR. the scientist is academician of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR, Merited Science Worker of the Ukrainian SSR. He is awarded the USSR State Prize.

Ivan Beloded is author of series of works on general linguistics, history and theory of Ukrainian and Russian languages, methodology and history of linguistics, lingvostylistics, and translation theory.

Furthermore, he is a co-author and editor-in-chief of the Course of History of Ukrainian Literary Language, Modern Ukrainian Literary Language, executive editor of the Dictionary of Ukrainian Language (eleven volumes), Russian-Ukrainian Dictionary (three volumes).

Bogdanov is born in Sokólka (Grodno Governorate). In 1892 he enters the Division of Natural Sciences of the School of Physics and Mathematics of Moscow University. After the student riots he is exiled to Tula for three years. He conducts revolutionary propaganda among the workers. Since the autumn of 1895 he is a student of the School of Medicine of Kharkiv University. In 1897 he publishes his first scientific work, the next year — the first philosophic work. His books contain a number of innovative ideas, in particular, the theory of the concept of ideology.

In 1899 he graduates from Kharkiv University, but is arrested for revolutionary propaganda shortly afterwards. In February 1901 Bogdanov is exiled to Vologda where he works as a resident doctor at a local mental health clinic, and engages in private medical practice.

In 1903 he joins the Bolsheviks. In 1908 he publishes the first Marxist utopia novel Red Star speculating on the use of nuclear energy and a threat it may pose for humanity.

During the First World War Alexander Bogdanov works as a regimental physician. In 1921 he becomes a full member of the Institute of Scientific Philosophy of Moscow State University.

In 1924 the scientist organizes a private group studying blood transfusion. Alexander Bogdanov dies while performing an experiment on himself.

Semion Braude is born in Poltava. In 1932 he graduates from Kharkiv Institute of Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. In 1933-1955 he works at this Institute, and at Kharkiv University.

In 1955-1980 Semion Braude is the Deputy Director of the Institute of Radiophysics and Electronics of the Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, and in 1980-1985 — heads a division of the Institute of Radiophysics and Electronics.

the scientist’s works are devoted to the microwaves electronics, wave propagation, radioastronomy.

Buzeskul is born in Popovka village (now Kharkiv oblast). In 1876-1880 he is a student of the School of History and Philology of Kharkiv University and since 1855 — a lecturer of the University.

Buzeskul’s scientific works become the first in the world historiography large-scale studies.

In 1922 the scientist is elected Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, in 1926 — Honorary Head of the Division of History and Ethnology of the All-Ukrainian Scientific Association of Oriental Studies.

All in all, Vladislav Buzeskul’s heritage is more than 200 scientific works in history, source studies, and historiography, which are still relevant today.

Bulankin receives his higher education at Kharkiv Institute of Public Education, and in 1929 completes his postgraduate studies at the Department of Comparative Physiology. In 1929-1931 he is the Dean of the School of Biology of Kharkiv Institute of Public Education. Since 1930, for almost 30 years, Ivan Bulankin is the Head of the Department of Biochemistry of Kharkiv University. He initiates a new direction in studies of age-specific physiology.

In 1945 Bulankin is elected Kharkiv University President. In 1955 he becomes an academician of the Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.

His scientific interests cover protein chemistry, age and comparative biochemistry.

Born in Kharkiv, Bulakhovskyi receives his higher education at the School of History and Philology of Kharkiv University. He works as a professor at Perm University, Kharkiv University, Moscow University, and the University of Kyiv. In 1946-1947 he heads the Department of Ukrainian Language, and in 1947-1960 — the Department of Slavic Philology of the University of Kyiv. In 1944-1961 he is the Director of the Institute of Linguistics of the Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, in 1957-1961 — the Head of the Ukrainian Committee of Slavists.

Bulakhovskyi is an executive editor, and one of the authors of the fundamental Course of Modern Ukrainian Literary Language, and author of textbooks for secondary and higher schools. His scientific heritage is almost 400 works, mostly devoted to language studies and linguistics, particularly of the Ukrainian language.

Veinberg receives his higher education at the School of History and Philology of Kharkiv University.

In 1858 he moved to St. Petersburg to become a professional man of letters. In 1868-1874 he heads the Department of Russian Literature of the University of Warsaw. Upon his return to St. Petersburg he gives lectures at St. Petersburg University, the Women Pedagogical Courses, and the Dramatic Courses of the Drama School.

Veinberg is an active member of the Literary Foundation. His works condemned servility, bribery. He is known as the best translator of his time, and translated from German, French, and English into Russian. He translates works by more than 60 European and American writers.

Born in Kharkiv, Verkin receives his higher education at the School of Physics and Mathematics of Kharkiv University. Soon afterwards he begins his postgraduate studies, and works at the laboratory of Low Temperature Physics of Kharkiv Institute of Physics and Technology.

He participates in the Great Patriotic War, and resumes full-fledged research in 1946.

In late 1950s Verkin advances an idea of establishing a specialized Institute of Low Temperature Physics, which is founded in Kharkiv in 1960. Verkin becomes its first director. Now the Institute is named after the scientist.

Volkov is born in Leningrad (now Russia). He studies at the School of Physics of Leningrad State University, then at the School of Physics and Mathematics of Kharkiv State University, from which he graduates in 1952. In 1956 he begins his work at Kharkiv Institute of Physics and Technology. In 1967 he heads the Institute laboratory.

Volkov is a Doctor of Physics and Mathematics, full professor, academician of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR. In 1997 the scientist is posthumously awarded Walter Thirring International Prize.

Volkov’s works are devoted to the elementary particle theory. He created the supersymmetry and supergravity theories, graduated 15 PhD and doctoral theses.

Vorobyov is born in Odesa. In 1897 he enters the School of Medicine of Kharkiv University. Since 1903 he works at the Department of Anatomy of Kharkiv University. In 1918 he becomes a professor at Kharkiv University.

In 1920-1921 Vorobyov lives in Bulgaria where he founds the Department of Anatomy and the Anatomical Museum at Sofia University.

Since 1921 and until his death he heads the Department of Anatomy of Kharkiv Medical Institute. He is one of the founders of the Ukrainian Institute of Experimental Medicine. He founds the scientific school of anatomists in Kharkiv and Sofia (Bulgaria).

He is among the first to develop functional anatomy, to discover the laws of the nervous system structural organization, to elaborate on studies of human organism integration organism. He comes up with a brand-new method of macro-microscopic research making it possible to combine anatomy and histology.

Vorobyov is considered to have founded stereomorphology. In 1932 he creates the first in the world Museum of Human Development.

Haïssinsky is born in Tarascha (now Kyiv oblast). In 1917-1920 he is a student of Kharkiv University. In 1923 he graduates from the University of Rome. In 1930-1936 he gives lectures at the University of Paris, and in 1940-1945 — at the University of Lyon. In 1937-1940, and in 1945-1976 he works at the National Center for Science Research of France, in particular, holding the position of director.

Haissinsky is one of the founders of radiological chemistry. He comes up with the uranoid conception, which is later named after him. He discovers the analogy of activating effect of ?-radiation and ultrasound on the chemical reaction behavior, determined the regularities in water radiolysis and base hydrogen solutions. In 1953 the scientist theoretically grounds the rules of seventh period element placement in the periodic table.

Galkin receives his higher education at Kharkiv University. In 1937-1941, and 1945-1960 he works at Kharkiv Institute of Physics and Technology. In 1960-1965 he is Deputy Director of the Institute for Low Temperature Physics and Technology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (NASU), since 1965 — the Director of NASU Donetsk Physical-Technical Institute. the scientist also works as a professor at Donetsk University.

Alexander Galkin’s scientific works are devoted to solid state physics, rotational spectroscopy, superconductivity, and high pressure physics In cooperation with his colleagues he discovers detecting properties of semiconductors, oscillations of the ultrasound absorption coefficient, sound velocity dispersion in a magnetic field, etc.

Galkin is an academician of the National Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR, Merited Scientist of Ukraine, laureate of the State Prize of Ukraine and Sinelnikov Prize. NASU Donetsk Physical-Technical Institute bears his name.

Honchar is born in Sukha (now Poltava oblast). He studies at the School of Philology of Kharkiv University. His publishing career begins in 1937.

During the Great Patriotic War he is awarded the Order of Red Star, the Order of Glory (III degree), and three Medals For Courage.

Some of his novels are awarded the highest national awards of the time: the National Shevchenko Prize for the novel “Person and weapon”, Lenin Prize for the novel “Tronka”, USSR State Prize for the novel “Your Dawn”, and some others.

In 1945-1946 Oles Honchar resumes his studies at the School of Philology of Dnipropetrovsk University.

the writer’s works have been republished many times, and translated into over 40 languages. the All-Ukrainian Foundation of Restoration of Prominent Monuments of Ukraine is named after him.

Born in Kharkiv, Grinyov receives his higher education at Kharkiv State University. He is a Doctor of Physics and Mathematics, full professor, corresponding member of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, holder of the State Prize of Ukraine. He is Merited Worker of Science and Technology of Ukraine.

Until 1985 the scientist works at Kharkiv State University, and since 1978 — at the Institute for Single Crystals (since 1994 as Deputy Director). Since 1996 he is the Director General of the Science and Technological Concern Institute for Single Crystals of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. In 1997-2000 he is the Deputy Minister of Science and Technology of Ukraine.

Boris Grinyov is author of more than 300 scientific works, and inventions. His scientific interests cover solid state physics, materials studies, instrument-making. He founded a scientific school studying the fundamental properties of scintillation materials.

Hulak-Artemovsky is born in Horodyshche (now Cherkasy oblast). He studies at Kyiv Theological Academy (didn’t finish), and since 1817 — at Kharkiv University. In 1818 he becomes a lecturer of Polish, taught history, geography, and statistics at Kharkiv University. Later he becomes a Master in Philology, and then an adjunct in Russian history and statistics. In 1829-1841 he is the Dean of the School of Philology, and in 1841–1849 — the President of the University of Kharkiv.

In 1816 Petro Hulak-Artemovsky begins his literary career. He writes fables, parables, poems, pastorals, ballads. He is the founder of the genre of romantic ballads in Ukrainian literature. His best works are written in the spirit of aesthetic enlightenment realism.

Danilewsky is born in Kharkiv. He studies at Kazan University, then at Kharkiv University. Three years upon graduation he is a professor at Kharkiv University, and Kharkiv Medical Institute.

In 1926 he is elected academician of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR. In 1927 he founds and heads the Ukrainian Institute of Organotherapy.

His scientific interests cover the nervous system physiology, electrophysiology, endocrinology, etc. He pioneered studies of physiological aspects of hypnosis in humans and animals.

Dzhanelidze is born in Samtredia village (Georgia). In 1903 he enters the School of Medicine of Kharkiv University, from which he is expelled in 1905 for his participation in the student disturbances. In 1909 he graduates from the University of Geneva where he is awarded the title of Doctor of Medicine.

In 1932 he initiated the foundation of the Research Institute of Acute Care, which he heads till 1950.

the scientist’s research saves lives of thousands of soldiers. He investigates surgery of heart, great vessels, burns, studies the problems of surgical treatment and treatment-evacuation support of the wounded in the navy. One of the operations is named after him. He is the first to have operated on a wounded heart (1911), and — to stitch up a wound on the aorta (1913).

Dzhanelidze is an academician of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, Merited Figure of the RSFSR, lieutenant general of the medical service.

In 1945 he is awarded the title of Hero of Socialist Labor for his outstanding achievements in development of national surgery. His other awards are the USSR State Prize, two Orders of Lenin, the Order of Red Banner, and medals.

Dolenko receives his higher education at the School of Geology and Geography of Kharkiv University. In 1945-1950 Dolenko is the Chief Geologist of the Soviet Oil Board in Austria, in 1950-1952 — the Chief Geologist of the Ukrainian Oil Exploration TruSt. In 1964 the scientist becomes a corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR, and in 1979 — an academician of the Ukrainian SSR.

His studies mostly focused on oil and gas geology, particularly the patterns in formation and layout of oil and gas deposits. He participates in discovering several oil and gas deposits.

Grigori Dolenko is a full member of many scientific societies, committees, and councils, presented his scientific reports in 13 countries of Europe, Asia, and America.

He is awarded Vernadsky Prize of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, the Ukrainian SSR State Prize in Science and Technology, the Order of Labor Red Banner.

Dunayevsky is born in Lokhvitsa village (now Poltava oblast). He starts to learn playing the violin at the age of eight, taught by a local amateur musician. He studies at the School of Law Kharkiv University (since 1918), but never completes his studies there, deciding to devote his life to music.

Dunayevsky writes operettas, ballets, choruses, songs and romances, composed music for plays, movies, orchestra, and piano.

Dunayevsky is awarded the State Prize of the USSR, the Order of Red Star, and the Badge of Honor.

Eremenko receives his higher education at Kharkiv University. In 1939-1941 the scientist works at Kharkiv University, in 1940-1953 — at the Institute of Ferrous Metallurgy of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR, in 1953-1960 — at the Institute of Metal Ceramics and Special Alloys, and in 1960-1987 — at the Institute for Problems of Material Science of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR. At the same time he scientist gives lectures at the University of Kyiv.

Eremenko is an academician of the Academy of Sciences of Ukrainian SSR, Merited Scientist of Ukraine, laureate of the State Prize of Ukraine, Paton and Frantsevich Prizes.

His scientific interests focus on chemical thermodynamics of alloys, phase balances and diagrams of the metal system condition, kinetics of solid state spreading and dissolution in molten metals.

Zabila receives her higher education at the Division of History of Kharkiv Institute of Public Education.

Natalia Zabila works as a teacher in Liubotyn and Kharkiv. In 1926 she publishes her first collection of poems. After the Great Patriotic War, the writer heads the Writers’ Union of Ukraine. She also works as a translator.

Her literary heritage is over 200 books.

Zaliubovskyi receives his higher education at the School of Physics and Mathematics of Kharkiv State University. Since 1967 he is the Vice-President for Research at Kharkiv University.

Illia Zaliubovskyi is Doctor of Physics and Mathematics, full professor, corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Merited Scientist of Ukraine, laureate of state prizes, and Cyril Sinelnikov Prize.

He is author and co-author of more than 400 scientific works. His scientific interests focus on studies of magnetic and quadrupole nuclear moments applying the stripping reaction to deformed nuclei, investigation of phenomena interrelation in cosmic rays.

Zelensky receives his higher education at Kharkiv State University. In 1993-1996 he is the Director General of the National Scientific Center Kharkiv Institute of Physics and Technology, in 1996-1998 — the Director of the Institute of Solid State Physics, Materials Science and New Technologies.

Zelensky investigates radiation damage to solids, radiation materials science, and materials technology. He initiates the development of modelling and quantitative simulation of radiation damage to materials of nuclear and fusion reactors on the charged particle accelerator.

Zelensky actively participates in settling the problem of nuclear disarmament of Ukraine, heads the group of scientific experts on nuclear weapons at the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine.

the scientist is a PhD in Physics and Mathematics, Doctor of Technical Sciences, full professor, academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, the USSR State Prize laureate, the Merited Science Worker of the Ukrainian SSR.

Ivanenko receives her higher education at Kharkiv Institute of Public Education, and completes her postgraduate studies at the Ukrainian Science Research Center of Pedagogy. Since 1934 Ivanenko is a member of the Writers’ Union of the USSR.

She is author of a large number of books for children.

John receives his higher education at the School of Law of Kharkiv University, in 1925 — the School of Theology of the University of Belgrade. In 1926 he becomes a monk choosing his orthodox name in honor of his relative Prelate Ioan of Tobolsk).

In 1934 John is elevated to bishop of Shanghai. He becomes a spiritual leader of orthodox christians in Shanghai. He founds an orphanage and home for the children of the destitute.

Since 1945 he is elevated to archbishop, in 1951 — assigned to the see of Western Europe. John is the founder of the Dutch Orthodox Church.

In 1962 John moves for the USA where in 1963 he is assigned to the of San Francisco. John is assigned to the see of San Francisco. He supervises the building of the largest in America orthodox cathedral Joy of all Saints.

In 1994 John is solemnly glorified by the Russian Orthodox Church abroad, later— by the Russian Orthodox Church.

Kavrayskiy receives his higher education at the School of Physics and Mathematics of Kharkiv University. Since 1921 he lectures at the Naval Academy (St. Petersburg).

Kavrayskiy is a recognized authority in mathematical cartography and astronomy, instrument making, geodesia, hydrography. He is author of more than 100 scientific works and academic study guides, most of which are still of relevance today.

the scientist is awarded the Order of Lenin, two orders of Red Banner, the Order of Labor Red Banner, medals. In 1952 he is awarded the USSR State Prize for his discovery of the navigation optical instrument.

Kansky is born in Dubovo village (now Odesa oblast). In 1935 he is enrolled in the preparatory courses of Kharkiv State University. In 1943 he joins the Red Army. On May 31, 1945 Kansky is awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union for exemplary completion of combat missions, heroism, personal courage and valor.

In 1946, after demobilization, Kansky becomes a student of Kharkiv University, in 1954 — completes his postgraduate studies there. In 1955-1971 he works at the Ukrheolohonerud Trust.

Kashchenko receives his higher education at the School of Natural Sciences of Kharkiv University. In 1888 he becomes a professor, and in 1894–1912 — the President of Tomsk University. In 1912 he becomes a professor at Kyiv Polytechnic Institute.

Kashchenko is the founder of pathological embryology. He is author of numerous works on fauna problems in Siberia, discoverer of a number of new species of vertebrates. He is an academician of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR, and the Academy of Sciences of Petrograd. the Acclimatization Department of the Central Republican Botanical Garden of the Ukrainian SSR Academy of Sciences is named after him.

Born in Kharkiv, Keppen receives his higher education at Kharkiv University. In 1821-1824 he travels about Europe where he studies Slavic antiquities and monuments of Austria, Hungary, Poland, Germany, the Czech Republic. In 1829-1834 he is in the Crimea collecting materials in history and ethnography. He is one of the organizers of the Russian Geographic Society, editor of one of the first bibliographical journals in Russia, contributor to the Geographical Statistical Dictionary of the Russian Empire, publisher of the first Ethnographic Map of European Russia.

Keppen focuses on antique history and ethnography of the Northern Black Sea region and publishes two books about the antiquities of the region. In 1837 he is elected academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, in 1858 — awarded the title of Honorary Member of Kharkiv University.

Born in Russkie Tishki village (now Kharkiv oblast), Kiprianov receives his higher education at Kharkiv University. He displays keen interest in science, particularly in organic chemistry. His first scientific work wins him a golden medal. Upon graduation, he works as an assistant, later associate professor and then full professor (1930) at the Department of Organic Chemistry.

In 1941 Kiprianov works at the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR in Kyiv, in 1944 — at the School of Chemistry of the University of Kyiv. In 1945-1960 he is the Director of the Institute of Organic Chemistry of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR.

the scientist’s works mainly focus on organic synthesis, and chemistry of organic dyes. He is the one to have discovered the phenomenon of chromosome interaction in complex organic dyes, and a new type of dyes — the cation ones. He is the founder of the scientific school of organic chemists, author and co-author of more than 150 scientific works.

Kiprianov is a laureate of the USSR State Prize. He is awarded the Orders of Lenin, Labor Red Banner, the Badge of Honor, and medals. In 1958 He is awarded the honorary title of Merited Scientist of the Ukrainian SSR. the Presidium of the Academy of Sciences of Ukraine has established a prize named after him.

Kistiakowsky is born in Kyiv. He studies at the University of Kyiv, the University of Kharkiv, the University of Tartu, and the University of Berlin. He lectures at the Commercial Institute and the Higher Women’s Courses in Moscow.

In 1917, upon the defense of his doctoral thesis, he becomes a professor at the School of Law of the University of Kyiv, which he heads in 1919. the same year he becomes an academician of the Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.

Kistiakowsky is one of the ideologists of the Ukrainian national revival, founder of the socio-cultural approach in the theory of law, supporter of the theory of legal self-determination of a state.

Kovalevsky is born in Volosky Kut village (now Kharkiv oblast). In 1868 he enters the School of Law of Kharkiv University.

In 1870s he works as a freelance university lecturer and later full professor at the School of Law of Moscow University.

In early 1880s he travels about the Southern Caucasus to study the the national ethos that have preserved customary law, and to collect materials as to formation, development, and breakdown of communes.

Kovalevsky gives lectures at Stockholm and Oxford Universities, made reports at the Universities of Vienna, Berlin, Paris. In 1901, he founds the Russian higher school of social sciences in Paris.

In 1906 Kovalevsky is elected member of the First State Duma,

Kovalevsky is elected a full member of St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences, Honorary Member of Kharkiv University.

Kovalevsky receives his higher education at the School of Law of Moscow University, attends lectures at Kharkiv University.

Kovalevsky is the author of the project about allocation of 200,000 roubles for development of public education in the province.

Kovalevsky is elected member of the First State Duma, supports the group of cadets.

Born in Konstantinograd (now Krasnohrad, Kharkiv oblast), Kopylenko receives his higher education at the School of Biology of Kharkiv Institute of Public Education.

He works at the People’s Commissariat for Education, editorial boards of newspapers and journals, teaches physical geography, is a member of several literary organizations.

Kopylenko begins his literary career with poetry, but gradually falls into prose. His first collections of short stories come out in early 1920s. His works evolve from romanticism to realism, his last one being about the life of rural intelligentsia.

Kopylenko’s works have been translated into foreign languages. In 1970s his name is given to a literary award.

Koretsky is born in Yekaterinoslav (now Dnipropetrovsk). In 1919-1911 he studies at Moscow University, in 1916 — graduates from Kharkiv University where he stays to prepare for the professor degree at the Department of Civil Law and Legal Proceedings. In 1920-1941 Koretsky is the Vice-President of Kharkiv Institute of National Economy.

He heads the Law Department of the National Commissariat for Foreign Affairs of the Ukrainian SSR, the Legal Department of the Central Union of Consumer Associations, the Legal Department of the Bank of Ukraine, acts as a consultant of the State Arbitration Tribunal at the Council of People’s Commissars of the Ukrainian SSR.

After Kharkiv liberation Koretsky resumes teaching at Kharkiv Law Institute. In 1948 he is elected academician of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR, in 1949 — heads the Sector of State and Law of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR created in Kyiv.

Koretsky is author of numerous scientific works on history of state and law, international private law, and international public law. He is the first national scientist to have become a member of the UN Committee for Progressive Development of International Law and Codification. He is a member of the UN Commission on International Law, a member of the International Court of Justice in the Hague, a member and the first Deputy Head of the UN Commission on Human Rights engaged in drafting the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. In 1946 the scientist is a counselor of the USSR representative in the UN Security Council. Koretsky is an honorary member of the Indian Society of International Law, the Institute of International Law, academician of the Mexican Academy of International Law, a corresponding member of the Argentinean Association of International Law.

He is the only scholar-lawyer in the USSR to have received the title of Hero of Socialist Labor. On February 15, 1990 the Council of Ministers of the Ukrainian SSR named the Institute of State and Law of the Academy of Sciences of Ukraine after Vladimir Koretsky.

Korchak-Chepurkovsky is born in Konstantinograd (now Krasnohrad, Kharkiv oblast). He is enrolled in the School of Law of the University of Kyiv, from which he is expelled for participation in student riots.

He receives his higher educations at the School of Medicine of Kharkiv University. He works as a sanitary inspector in Poltava, Kherson region, Bessarabia, and since 1899 — in Kyiv. In 1903-1934 he is a freelance university lecturer, professor, and Head of the Department of Hygiene of Kiev Medical Institute. At the same time since 1921 he is the Head of the Department of Public Health (later the Department of Hygiene and Sanitation) of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR. In 1934-1938 he heads a department at the Institute of Demography and Sanitary Statistics, in 1938-1941 — acts as a consultant at the Institute of Clinical Physiology of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR.

Korchak-Chepurkovsky’s works focus on epidemiology, and the sanitary state of people. They formulate the law of diphtheria epidemic recurrence, set forth the provisions as to the antagonism between diphtheria epidemics and other children’s infections, cover modern nomenclature of diseases in the Ukrainian language. Famous are his works on the history of county medicine, epidemiology, prevention of infectious diseases, and medical statistics.

Kostomarov is born in Yurasovka (now Voronezh oblast, Russian Federation). He enters the School of History and Philology of Kharkiv University, studies ancient languages, ancient history, German philosophy, and new French literature, learns to play the piano, attempts writing poetry. Drawing together with a group of Ukrainian romanticists of Kharkiv University soon defines his interest in folklore, and Cossacks’ past of Ukraine.

In 1837-1838 Kostomarov attends lectures at Moscow University. In 1846-1848 he is an adjunct professor of the Department of Russian History of the University of Kyiv.

In 1845-1846 Kostomarov is one of the founders of the Brotherhood of Saints Cyril and Methodius where he advocates creation of the all-slavic federation of peoples. In 1859-1862 Kostomarov is an extraordinary professor of the Department of Russian History of St. Petersburg University.

In 1864 the Council of the University of Kyiv awards Kostomarov the degree of Doctor of Russian Literature. In 1876 he becomes a corresponding of St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences. Kostomarov is the founder of the populist direction in Ukrainian historiography, and one of the first Ukrainian literary critics. the scientific heritage is for the most part devoted to the socio-political, and economic history of Ukraine and Russia in the XVII-XVIII centuries, Ukrainian folklore, and ancient documents. He is also author of poems, historical plays, novellas in Ukrainian and Russian.

Kuznets is born in Kharkiv (according to other sources, in Pinsk). He spends two years studying at the School of Law of Kharkiv University. In 1921 he publishes his first article.

In 1922 he is enrolled in Columbia University to be awarded a doctoral degree in 1926. He is a researcher of the Council on Studies in Social Sciences, and the National Bureau of Economic Research. His scientific work about the national income calculation is a significant contribution to the development of economic science. Kuznets is the first scientist to have investigated the interdependence between economic fluctuations and the long-term economic growth.

Since 1930 Kuznets gives lectures at American universities, and since 1960 he is a professor of economics at Harvard University.

Kuznets’ scientific works contain economic and statistical studies of the investment dynamics, field-specific and technological structure of investment, the evolution of the capital accumulation in the USA, and in other countries, the economic cycles, and the economic growth. He is the founder of the theory of building cycles, i. e. fluctuations with intervals of 18–25 years associated with periodic mass accommodation renewal by the new generation. While investigating the peculiarities of the demographic processes, Kuznets discovers the regularity in this phenomenon dynamics, and comes up with a series of important general economic regularities in the global economy development. In 1971 he is awarded the Nobel Prize.

Kulchitsky gets his higher education at the School of Medicine of Kharkiv University. After the thesis Defense he holds a position of privat docent of the Department of Histology of Kharkiv University, in 1889 — that of extraordinary professor.

In 1898 Kulchitsky works as Head of the Medical Admission Committee at Moscow University. Till March 1901 he is Dean of the School of Medicine of Kharkiv University. Afterwards he heads the Department of Histology and Embryology, and in 1908 — the Department of Descriptive Anatomy. At that period goes on scientific trips abroad, takes part in congresses of physicians and natural history scientists. He keeps a close eye on new methods in medicine, works hard on mastering microscopic studies.

In 1912 Kulchitsky moves to Kazan to work as a curator of Kazan educational district. There he becomes a privy councillor. In 1914 he is a curator of St. Petersburg educational district, in 1916 — Minister of Education of the Russian Empire.

In 1918 he is arrested, but soon set free. In 1920 he emigrates to Constantinople, then Tunis, in 1921 — to Great Britain. He teaches at the University of Oxford for several years.

He is awarded seven Russian orders, and the French Order of Legion of Honor.

Kuryachiy is born in Berdiansk. After finishing Kharkiv Chemical Technical School, he works as a technician at the laboratory of the Ukrainian Research Institute of Applied Chemistry. In 1933 he graduates from the School of Chemistry of Kharkiv Institute of Physics and Technology.

In 1935-1936 Kuryachiy is a contract soldier in the Red Army. Since 1938 he is a researcher at the Institute of Chemistry of Kharkiv University.

He participates in the Great Patriotic War. the artillery battery under Kuryachiy’s command takes part in battles at the South-West Front, and in the defense of Kyiv. As part of cavalry corps of Bryansk Front, the battery conducts offensive operations in the winter of 1941-1942, and takes part in Voronezh Front defensive battles.

In 1943 Kuryachiy is tragically killed during the battle near Valuyki and Volokonovka stations. the artillery battery under his command destroys more than 20 tanks and armored vehicles of the enemy. On January 10, 1944 Kuryachiy is posthumously awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union. One of the lecture halls of Karazin University is named after Kuryachiy. the University annually holds Kuryachiy tournaments.

Born in Kharkiv, Lazarenko receives his higher education at the School of Geology and Geography of Kharkiv State University. In 1939-1942 he works at Voronezh University, and in the Ural Division of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. In 1944-1969 he is a department head, in 1951-1963 — President of Lviv University. the scientist is also Director of the Institute of Geological Sciences of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR, division head in the Institute of Geochemistry and the Physics of Minerals of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR. Lazarenko is an academician of the Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Merited Science Worker of Ukraine, a member of the Mineralogical Society of Great Britain and Ireland. He is awarded the State Prize of the Ukrainian SSR.

the scientist’s scientific works are devoted to systemization and nomenclature of minerals, studies of minerals genesis, history of mineralogy. the new minerals donbasit and tarasovit are discovered under the supervision of Lazarenko. He is father of the Ukrainian scientific school of regional mineralogy.

Lysenko is born in Hrynky (now Poltava oblast). He studies at Kharkiv University (1858), the University of Kyiv (since 1859), Leipzig Conservatory (1867-1869), and St. Petersburg Conservatory (1874-1876).

the composer collects folk songs, makes their musical adaptations. Lysenko’s name is associated with the development of Ukrainian classical music.

Since 1869 he teaches in Kyiv at private music schools, the vocational music school, and other educational institutions. In 1904 he opens a music and drama school in Kyiv.

the composer’s musical heritage is prolific and diverse. His music is vivid and nationally colored, organically interweaving folk song fundamentals.

Kharkiv State Academic Opera and Ballet Theater is named after Mykola Lysenko. Lysenko Republic Prize of the Ukrainian SSR is founded in 1982.

Litvinenko receives his higher education at the School of Chemistry of Kharkiv University. In 1951 he defends his PhD thesis in organic chemistry. Since 1959 he is Head of the Department of Technical Chemistry of Kharkiv University, since 1965 — academician of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR.

In 1965-1968 Litvinenko holds the position of President of Donetsk University, in 1968-1975 — Head of Donetsk Branch of the Institute of Physical Chemistry of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR. Since 1975 he is Director of the Institute of Physical-Organic Chemistry and Coal Chemistry of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR.

Litvinenko is awarded Lev Pesarzhevsky Prize. the Institute of Physical-Organic Chemistry and Coal Chemistry is named after him.

Born in Kharkiv, Lifshitz receives his higher education at Kharkiv University, in 1938 — from Kharkiv Institute for Mechanical Machine-Engineering (now the National Technical University Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute). In 1937-1968 he works at the Institute of Physics and Technology of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR, since 1968 — at the Institute for Physical Problems of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. He also works as a professor at Kharkiv University (since 1944), and M. V. Lomonosov Moscow State University (since 1964).

His main scientific works are devoted to solid-state theory, electron theory of metals, theory of disorder systems, physical kinetics, and polymer physics. Lifshitz creates the dynamic theory of imperfect crystals. Together with his colleagues he creates the modern form of electron theory of metals, for which he is awarded Lenin Prize. the scientist formulates the theory of electron spectrum of disorder systems; together with Arnold Kosevich he discovers the phenomenon of oscillations of thermodynamic and kinetic properties of solid-state films.

Lifshitz creates a theoretical school of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. He is corresponding member, academician of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR, academician of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. He is awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor, Lenin Prize, State Prize of Ukraine, and medals.

Malushchenko is born in Chutovka village (now Poltava oblast). Since 1930 he works on the construction of Kharkiv Tractor Plant. In 1940 he receives his higher education at the School of History of Kharkiv State University.

Malushchenko participates in the Great Patriotic War, particularly in combat operations conducted by the air units of the South-West Front, Stalingrad Front, Southern Front, Fourth Ukrainian Front, and Third Belorussian Front. He carries out 207 operation flights.

On June 29, 1945 Malushchenko is awarded the Hero of the Soviet Union. He is also awarded two orders of the Red Banner, the Order of the Patriotic War (First Class), the Order of the Patriotic War (Second Class), medals “For the Defense of Stalingrad”, “For the Capture of Königsberg”, and “For the Victory over Germany in the Great Patriotic War 1941–1945”.

After the war he defends his PhD thesis, and works as a lecturer at higher educational institutions of Kyiv, and Cherkasy. In the postwar period he is awarded four orders of the Red Banner of Labor, the Badge of Honor, and medals.

Born in Kharkiv, Manzheliy receives his higher education at the School of Physics and Mathematics of Kharkiv University. In 1955-1960 he works as a lecturer at the Department of Experimental Physics, and simultaneously continues his scientific work. Since 1950 Manzheliy works at the Institute for Low Temperature Physics and Engineering of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (NASU). In 1970 he becomes Doctor of Physics and Mathematics, in 1972 — full professor, in 1982 — corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.

One of the most significant achievements of Manzheliy is foundation of the scientific school of physics of cryocrystals bringing together seven doctors of sciences, and several dozens of PhD-holders. the development of the school resulted in foundation of numerous laboratories not only at the NASU Institute for Low Temperature Physics and Engineering, but also at physical institutions of other countries.

the scientist’s works are devoted to physics of low temperatures. He is awarded the State Prize of the Ukrainian SSR, the State Prize of the USSR, the Badge of Honor Order.

Martos is born in Gradizk (Poltava oblast). He is a student of the School of Mechanics and Mathematics of Kharkiv University, and a member of the Ukrainian Student Hromada in Kharkiv.

Martos is an active participant of the revolutionary events of 1905-1907, and the Ukrainian national liberation movement of 1917. Since 1905 he is a member of the Ukrainian Social Democratic Labor Party. He is also a member of the Central Rada, and the Mala Rada. In April-September 1919 he heads the government of the Ukrainian People’s Republic.

Since 1920 he lives in exile in Germany and Czechoslovakia, is one of the organizers of the Ukrainian Rural Academy in Podebrady.

Martos is a full member of Shevchenko Scientific Society, and the Ukrainian Free Academy.

Since 1959 he lives in the USA. He writes a series of works on organization and activity of cooperative associations of different types.

Marchenko is born in Kharkiv. In 1939-1941 he studies at the School of Physics of Leningrad State University, in 1945 graduates from Kharkiv State University where he works afterwards in 1945-1961.

Since 1961 the scientist is the Head of the Division of Mathematical Physics of the Institute for Low Temperature Physics and Engineering, while simultaneously working at Kharkiv State University.

Marchenko’s works are devoted to functional analysis, and mathematical physics. He develops methods of solving inverse problems of scattering theory, devises symptomless formulae for spectral functions, introduces the concept of generalized spectral function, grounds the theory of boundary problems with fine-grain boundary. In cooperation with Leonid Pastur the scientist creates a new direction in theoretical physics, which is spectral theory of random matrices and random operators.

Marchenko is an academician of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR, academician of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, Merited Worker of Science and Technology of Ukraine, laureate of Lenin Prize, the State Prize of Ukraine. He is awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor, the Order of Prince Yaroslav the Wise (V and IV class). the scientist is Doctor Honoris Causa of V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University.

Born in Ivanovka village (now Kharkiv oblast), Mechnikov receives his higher education at the Division of the Natural Sciences of the School of Physics and Mathematics of Kharkiv University. Then he goes on scientific trips to Germany and Italy. He defends his Master’s thesis, and doctoral thesis at St. Petersburg University. In 1870-1882 he works as a professor at the Imperial Novorossiya University in Odessa.

the scientist organizes the first in Ukraine and the Russian Empire bacteriological station, founds the first national school of microbiologists, immunologists, and pathologists. Mechnikov heads a laboratory of the Pasteur Institute for 28 years .

the scientist is author of many scientific works in biology and medicine, one of the founders of evolutionary embryology, proposes an original theory of the origin of metazoans .

In 1882 Mechnikov discovers the phenomenon of phagocytosis, for which in 1901 he is awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine.

the scientist is a honorary member of many academies of sciences, scientific societies, and institutes. Odessa National University bears his name.

Mysyk receives his higher education at Kharkiv University. He participates in the Great Patriotic War. His first works are published in 1923. In 1934 he is arrested and sentenced to five years in prison for having been in contact with the nationalist elements. In 1956 he is rehabilitated.

In 1950-1970 Mysyk publishes several collections of poems: Selected Works, Borozny, Verhovittia, Chornotrop, Near a Well, and others. He translates works of George Byron, Percy Shelley, Robert Burns, Walt Whitman, Hakim Abu?l-Qasim Ferdowsi, Saadi Shirazi, Omar Khayyam, and others into Ukrainian.

In 1977 he is awarded Maksym Rylsky Prize for his contribution to the development of translation studies, medals of the USSR, and the Diploma of Merit of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Ukrainian SSR.

Born in Kharkiv, Muratov receives his higher education at the School of Philology of Kharkiv University that he graduates in 1939.

He participates in the Winter War, and the Great Patriotic War (November 1939), and is demobilized in October 1945. In the postwar years he is the editor-in-chief of the newspaper For Returning to Native Land in Berlin.

Muratov’s first works are published in Kharkiv periodicals in early 1930s. He is a member of the Writers’ Union of Ukraine. He is awarded the Order of October Revolution, the Badge of Honor, and medals of the USSR.

Nikitin receives his higher education at the School of Biology of Kharkiv Institute of Public Education that he graduates in 1929. In 1929-1934 he is a postgraduate student of the Institute of Zoology and Biology. In 1930-1953 he works at Kharkiv Zootechnical Institute, and since 1953 holds the position of Director of the Institute of Biology of Kharkiv University.

Nikitin is a Merited Science Worker of the Ukrainian SSR, corresponding member, and then academician of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR. For a long time he is the Head of Kharkiv Branch of Society Znannya, and Kharkiv Regional Scientific Society of Physiologists.

the scientist’s works are devoted to age-specific and comparative physiology, biochemistry of animals, digestion endocrinology of ruminant animals, age-specific and comparative haematology. He also investigates the nervous system role in ageing process regulation, etc.

Nikitin is awarded the State Prize of Ukraine, and Alexander Bogomolets Prize.

Lehki is born in Khodoriv (Lviv oblast). After school, in 1987, he starts working at Lviv Diocesan Administration, in 1989 he transfers to Kharkiv diocesan administration.

In 1990 the future Metropolitan is elevated to the deacon rank, in 1992 — to the priest rank, in 1993 — to the archpriest rank.

In 1993 he graduates from Odessa Theological Seminary, in 1998 — Kiev Theological Academy, in 2009 — Kharkiv University (B. S. in History). Then he is appointed superior of St. Sergius community.

On April 20, 2000 he takes monastic vows and the name Onufry. Later he is consecrated as Bishop of Izyum, Vicar of the Diocese of Kharkiv.

On May 8, 2012 he is appointed Head of Kharkiv and Bohodukhiv Dioceses.

In 2013 he is elected Metropolitan of Kharkiv and Bohodukhiv.

Ostrogradsky receives his higher education at the Division of Physics and Mathematics of Kharkiv University.

To deepen his knowledge, Ostrogradsky moves to Paris. In 1822-1827 he lives in France, attends lectures of such famous scientists as André-Marie Ampère, Augustin-Louis Cauchy, and others. In December 1829 Ostrogradsky is elected aide-de-camp in applied mathematics at St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences and the next year he becomes a professor there.

Ostrogradsky’s scientific interests are extremely broad. His major works are devoted to mathematical physics, mathematical analysis, theoretical mechanics. the scientist is author of many books, textbooks, and lecture courses. His prolific printed works are more than 100 titles.

His fundamental research in the field of mechanics, mathematical analysis, many-year teaching practice, and creation of a scientific school gain him the fame of the most distinguished mathematician in the world of his time.

He is elected Doctor Honoris Causa of the University of Vienna, and the University of Helsingfors, corresponding member of Turin Academy of Sciences, Rome Academy of Sciences, and Paris Academy of Sciences. In 1859 he is an Honorary Member of Kharkiv University. He is also awarded the Order of St. Anna (I class), and the Order of St. Vladimir (II class).

Peletminsky receives his higher education at the School of Physics and Mathematics of Kharkiv University. In 1959 he defends his PhD thesis.

In 1971 he is the Head of the Laboratory of Statistical Physics of the Institute of Physics and Technology of the Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (NASU); later he becomes Head of the Division of Theoretical Physics where he is still working. In 1966 Peletminsky receives the degree of Doctor of Physics and Mathematics, in 1978 he is elected NASU corresponding member, and in 1990 — NASU full member.

Peletminsky, together with his pupils, generalizes the method of reduced description of quantum systems with broken symmetry. His recent works deal with the methods for studying superfluidity and phase transitions in nuclear matter. He has created a scientific school in statistical physics, authored over 200 scientific publications.

Pogorelov is born in Korocha, Kursk Governorate (now Belgorod oblast). In 1937 he is enrolled in the Division of Mathematics of Kharkiv University, during the Great Patriotic War — in N. E. Zhukowsky Air Force Academy in Moscow (Russian Federation), which he graduates from in 1945. Since 1947 he works at Kharkiv University.

In 1959-1960 Pogorelov works at the Institute of Mathematics of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR, and since 1960 — at the Institute for Low Temperature Physics and Engineering, and at Kharkiv University. Since 1978 he is the Head of Kharkiv Scientific Center of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR.

Pogorelov’s works are devoted to general geometry, and geometry of elastic shells. He creates the scientific school of mathematicians, and is author of numerous textbooks on geometry for higher and secondary school.

Pogorelov is a laureate of Lobachevsky International Prize, the State Prize of Ukraine, and Krylov Prize. He is academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, academician of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, Doctor Honoris Causa of Kharkiv University, Honorary Citizen of Kharkiv. He is awarded Lenin Prize for his works written in 1956-1960. He is also awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor, Stalin Prize, and many other governmental prizes.

Potebnja receives his higher education at the School of History and Philology of Kharkiv University.

Since 1861 he is an adjunct of the Department of Russian Language and Literature of Kharkiv University, since 1875 — an ordinary professor there. In 1862 he goes to Germany to attend lectures on Sanskrit at the University of Berlin. Upon his return, Potebnja becomes an associate professor of the Department of Slavic Language and Literature, and a secretary of the School of History and Philology.

Potebnja’s works are devoted to general linguistics, phonetics, grammar, semantics, etymology, dialectology, theory of language and literature, folklore, and ethnography. He makes the first poetic translation of Homer’s Odyssey into Ukrainian, and is one of the first representatives of the psychological school of literary criticism.

In 1874 Potebnja wins Lomonosov Prize for his doctoral thesis Notes on Russian Grammar. the same year he is elected corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences. He is one of the first representatives of the psychological school of literary studies in national science .

Reznichenko receives his higher education at the Division of Natural Sciences of the School of Physics and Mathematics of Kharkiv University.

Reznichenko carries out his geological and geographical studies in Tian Shan, Altai. He is awarded Nikolai Przhevalsky Medal for his studies of Altai. Since 1916 he works in Ukraine. He is one of the first organizers of geological studies in Ukraine.

Since 1918 the scientist is a member of the Ukrainian Geological Committee, since 1929 — academician of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR. In 1930-1932 he is the Director of the Research Institute of Geology Sciences of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR.

Reznichenko is author of scientific works on general, dynamic and regional geology, hydrogeology, geography, and archaeology. He draws up the first geological and tectonic maps of South Altai. the scientist is also known as an artist (political caricature) and a poet (literary artistic miscellany).

Samoylik is born in Valky (now Kharkiv oblast). Since 1927 she works as an elementary school teacher in Kharkiv. In 1934-1938 she is a student of the School of Geography of Kharkiv University. Upon graduation she works as a teacher of geography, and deputy principal. In 1944-1972 is the principal of secondary school Mo. 126 in Kharkiv.

Samoylik is a Merited Teacher of the Ukrainian SSR, and Hero of Socialist Labor (since August 6, 1968). She is awarded Anton Makarenko Medal.

Semynozhenko receives his higher education at the School of Physics and Technology of Kharkiv State University. He is a Doctor of Physics and Mathematics, full professor, academician of the Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (since 1992), a member of the Board of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Head of the North-East Science Center, and the National Foundation Ukraine to Children, former Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine.

Semynozhenko heads the State Scientific Institution Institute for Single Crystals of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine for more than ten years. In 1996-1998 he is the Minister of Science and Technology of Ukraine, in 1999 and in 2001-2002 — Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine for Humanitarian Affairs, in 2001-2014 — Head of the Ukrainian State Agency for Science, Innovation and Informatization, in 1994-2001 — deputy of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine (XIII and XIV callings).

Semynozhenko is twice a laureate of the State Prize of Ukraine in Science and Technology. He is awarded two Orders of Merit (III and II Class), the Order of St. Prince Vladimir (IV Class), the Order of Prince Yaroslav the Wise (V Class), the International Prize for Nuclear Physics. He is author of more than 300 scientific works and inventions. His scope of interests also includes arts, and sports. the scientist is a member of the National Union of Artists of Ukraine, Honorary Academician of the Academy of Arts of Ukraine, since 2000 — Doctor Honoris Causa of Kharkiv University.

Siemiradzki is born in Novobelgorod village (now Pechenigy township, Kharkiv oblast). He studies at the Second Kharkiv Gymnasium. Then he is enrolled in the Division of Natural Sciences of the School of Physics and Mathematics of Kharkiv University.

Later he studies at the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts. He spends a while abroad, mainly in Rome. His artistic works, mostly depicting biblical scenes, are highly appreciated by St. Petersburg Academy of Art, as well as foreign academies.

His painting Leading Light of Christianity gains Siemiradzki international fame and the title of professor.

the artist participates in international art exhibitions in Vienna, Paris, etc., and travelling academic exhibitions in Russia in Odesa, Riga, Kyiv, and other cities.

Siemiradzki is a full member of the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts, member of the Academy of Fine Arts (Berlin), the Academy of Fine Arts (Stockholm), the Academy of Fine Arts (Rome), and a corresponding member of the Academy of Fine Arts in Paris. He has the title of Chevalier of the French Order of the Legion of Honor. His paintings are found in museums and art galleries in Krakow, Moscow, St. Petersburg, Kharkiv, Lviv, and many other cities.

Simon gains his higher education at the School of Physics and Mathematics of Kharkiv University.

Simon participates in the Great Patriotic War (since September 1941), in particular, in the battles of the South-West, Bryansk, and the First Baltic Fronts against Nazi invaders. He is a mortar platoon commander. On July 22, 1944 Simon received the Hero of the Soviet Union.

November 1944 through May 1945 he is a student of Orlov Advanced Courses for Reserve Officers, and afterwards — an instructor at the Courses.

After the war he finishes his higher education at the University (1948), and works as a physics and astronomy instructor there for more than 30 years. He is a Merited Teacher of Ukraine, and high-achiever in Public Education.

Sitenko receives his higher education at the School of Medicine of Kharkiv University. In 1911 he works at Kharkiv Women’s Medical Institute. Since 1921 he is the chief physician of Kharkiv Medical and Mechanics Institute, since 1926 — Director of the Research Institute of Orthopaedics and Traumatology. He heads the first in Ukraine Department of Orthopaedics at Kharkiv Institute of Advanced Training of Physicians. Since 1935 Sitenko is a corresponding member of the Academy of Science of the Ukrainian SSR, since 1936 — Merited Science Worker of the Ukrainian SSR.

Sitenko’s works are devoted to military field surgery, pseudarthrosis, osteoplasty applications, locomotor apparatus inborn deformities, etc. He introduces several orthopedic surgeries, founds new forms of traumatological health facilities in Ukraine.

In 1940 the Ukrainian Research Institute of Orthopaedics and Traumatology is named after Mikhail Sitenko. A memorial plate in his honor is placed on the building of the Institute.

Slutskin receives his higher education at Kharkiv University, and begins to work there at first as an assistant, and later, in 1929, as a professor.

He founds the Department of Physics, and physical labs at Artem Communist University. In 1928 he is on a trip abroad where he works at the Laboratory of Heinrich Georg Barkhausen. At the same time, since 1930, he is the Head of the Unit of Electromagnetic Waves of Kharkiv Institute of Physics and Technology.

Since 1939 Slutskin is a corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, since 1948 — academician of the Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, since 1937 — Doctor of Physics and Mathematics.

the scientist is the founder of the scientific school of physicists. He is author of more than 50 scientific works on electromagnetic oscillations. He is awarded diplomas of the Verkhovna Rada of the Ukrainian SSR, the Verkhovna Rada of the Kazakh SSR, the medal “For Valiant Labor in the Great Patriotic War 1941–1945”.

Sobko is born in Moscow. In 1930 he moves to Kharkiv, and works at the construction works of Kharkiv Tractor Plant.

In 1934 he is enrolled in the School of Philology of Kharkiv University, but later transfers to the University of Kyiv, which he graduates from in 1939. During the Great Patriotic War he works at the army newspapers.

Still at Kharkiv Tractor Plant, he begins writing poetry. Later tries his hand at essays and sketches. He is also author of novellas and novels of different genres.

the main themes in Sobko’s works are the war events, and postwar life of the Soviet people.

Sobko is awarded the USSR State Prize (for the novel the Peace Guarantee), and Shevchenko State Prize of the Ukrainian SSR (for the novel Likhobor).

Born in Kharkiv, Sokalsky receives his higher education at the School of Physics and Mathematics of Kharkiv University. In 1855 he gets a Master’s degree in chemistry. Since 1856 he is an officer at the Department of Agriculture in St. Petersburg. In 1856-1857 he is a private secretary of the Russian Consul in New York.

Since 1858 Sokalsky lives in Odesa, publishes and edits the newspaper Odessa Bulletin. In 1862-1863 he is a student of St. Petersburg Conservatory.

Sokalsky’s heritage as a composer includes operas (Mazepa, and Dubno Siege), the cantata Banquet of Peter the Great, more than 40 romances, etc.

Sosyura is born in Debaltseve station (Donetsk oblast). He participates in the Ukrainian War of Independence (at first in the army of the Ukrainian People’s Republic, then — on the side of the Red Army).

Sosyra’s first works are published in 1917.

In 1922-1923 the poet studies at the Artem Communist University in Kharkiv, then at the workers’ school of Kharkiv Institute of Public Education. In 1920s several collections of his poems are published. During the Great Patriotic War he is a correspondent of a battle-field newspaper.

Sosyra is awarded the USSR State Prize, and Shevchenko State Prize of the Ukrainian SSR. In 1951 he is criticized, and accused of bourgeois nationalism for his patriotic poem Love Ukraine.

the poet is awarded the Order of Lenin, the Order of the Red Banner of Labor, the Badge of Honor. He is elected member of the board of the Writer’s Union of Ukraine.

Sreznevsky is born in Yaroslavl. In 1812 his family moves to Kharkiv where he receives his higher education at the Division of Ethics and Politics of the School of Philosophy of Kharkiv University. Upon graduation he works as an instructor at several educational institutions of the city while studying statistics, political economy, law, and history.

In early 1830s Sreznevsky initiates a group of folk language and literature lovers. In 1831 the group under the guidance of Sreznevsky and Roskovshenko publishes Kharkiv Almanac, the first edition of the kind in Ukraine. It includes examples of Ukrainian folk works, poems, ballads, scholarly and literary critical articles.

In 1837 after his Master’s thesis Defense, Sreznevsky becomes a professor of Political Economy and Statistics at Kharkiv University. Later he goes on an academic trip abroad to study Slavonic languages.

Since 1842 he teaches a course of Slavonic studies at Kharkiv University. Then he teaches at St. Petersburg University.

Sreznevsky’s scholarly heritage includes about 800 publications on Russian and Slavonic philology, history, culture, political economy and law, ethnography and folklore, archeology and source studies, archeography and paleography, pedagogy and methods of language teaching. He is among the first to have recognized the Ukrainian language to be a separate Slavonic language.

the scientist is an Honorary Member of Kharkiv University.

Starytsky is born in Klishchyntsi (now Cherkasy oblast). When orphaned, he is brought up in the family of composer Mykola Lysenko.

He receives his higher education at the School of Natural Sciences of Kharkiv University, then at the University of Kyiv. In 1872 Starytsky and Lysenko organize the Society of Ukrainian Stage Actors, in 1883 Starytsky becomes head, and director of the first Ukrainian united professional troupe. In 1883-1884 he issues the Ukrainian almanac Rada.

Starytsky’s contribution to the development of the Ukrainian professional theater is significant. He is author of poetical works, novels, novellas, short stories, sketches, translations of Alexander Pushkin, George Byron, Heinrich Heine, and others.

Starytsky puts down folk songs, writes libretto to Lysenko’s operas.

Steklov receives his higher education at the School of Physics and Mathematics of Kharkiv University. In 1889-1906 he works at the Department of Mechanics of Kharkiv University, and teaches theoretical mechanics at Kharkiv Technological Institute. In 1904 he is elected Dean of the School of Physics and Mathematics of Kharkiv University. In 1906-1919 he is a professor of St. Petersburg University, later — Head of the Institute of Physics and Mathematics of the Academy of Sciences.

Steklov’s works are devoted to mathematics, physics, mathematical analysis, hydromechanics, theory of elasticity, history of mathematics, and philosophy. the scientist’s great achievement is the development of closeness theory of orthogonal function systems.

Steklov is a member of Kharkiv Mathematical Society, Moscow Mathematical Society, an honorary member of Leningrad Mathematical Society, a corresponding member of Göttingen Academy of Sciences, an academician of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, the Vice-President of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. the Mathematical Institute of the Russian Academy of Science in Moscow (Russian Federation) is named after Steklov.

Strahov receives his higher education at Kharkiv University. Since 1918 he works at the Agricultural Institute, in 1921-1941 and 1944-1960 — at Kharkiv Institute of Public Education. At the same time he works at the Ukrainian Research Institute for Plants Protection, and the Institute of Genetics and Selection of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR. During the Great Patriotic War, while staying in Uzbekistan, he comes up with methods of seeds and soils treatment allowing to raise the level of cotton yield.

Strahov is a corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR, Merited Science Worker of the Ukrainian SSR, Honorary Member of Lenin All-Union Academy of Agricultural Sciences. He comes up with the theory of pathological process in plants, develops agrotechnical and chemical agents to raise plant resistance to diseases. Strahov is author of more than 90 scientific works on phytopathology.

Born in Kharkiv, Struve receives his higher education at the School of Physics and Mathematics of Kharkiv University. In 1920 he emigrates to the USA where he works at first as an assistant, and then as a professor of astronomy at the University of Chicago, Director of York Observatory. the scientist is the founder of McDonald Observatory at the University of Texas. In 1959-1961 Struve is the Director of the US National Radio Astronomy Observatory in Green Bank. In 1952 he is elected President of the International Astronomical Union.

Struve’s works are devoted to theoretical and practical spectroscopy, and stellar atmosphere physics. He is one of the first astronomers to have discovered and proven single star rotation. He also studies peculiar star spectra, interstellar gas, and ionized hydrogen fields. Struve is the author of the star evolution hypothesis.

Struve is an Honorary Member of the Royal Society in London, and many other academies of sciences, and scientific societies.

Sumtsov receives his higher education at the School of History and Philology of Kharkiv University. He works as a privat-docent, then as a professor, Head of the Museum of Ethnography of Kharkiv University; in 1897-1919 he is the Head of Kharkiv Historical and Philological Society.

Sumtsov is one of the initiators of foundation of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences, and the Public Library opening in Kharkiv (now Korolenko Kharkiv State Scientific Library).

Sumtsov is author of more than 1500 scholarly works on Ukrainian folklore studies, ethnography, history of Ukrainian literature of the XVIII-XX centuries. Some of his works are devoted to the history of West-European literature and fine arts.

Sumtsov is known to be an advocate and promoter of Ukrainian national culture. He vigorously defends the right of the Ukrainian language to existence in printed editions and in teaching in primary, secondary and higher school. After the Revolution of 1905 Sumtsov is the first Kharkiv professor to give lectures in Ukrainian.

Born in Kharkiv, Sukhomlinov receives his higher education at the School of History and Philology of Kharkiv University.

Since March 1852 the scientist works as an adjunct at the Department of Russian Language and Literature of St. Petersburg University. Since 1860 he is an extraordinary professor, since 1864 — an ordinary professor at the Department of Russian Language and Literature of the School of History and Philology of St. Petersburg University. In 1858-1860 he goes on a scientific trip to Europe where he visits Austria, Czechia, and Serbia, attends lectures in Slavonic studies, meets with known scientists and public figures.

Sukhomlinov is elected Honorary Member of St. Petersburg University, Kazan University, the University of Kyiv, and Kharkiv University.

Timchenko is born in Kharkiv region. He receives his education in the mechanical workshops of Kharkiv University. Since 1880 he heads the mechanical workshops of Novorossia University in Odesa.

Timchenko is author of many original inventions, in particular automatically operated, meteorological, physical, and astronomical devices. He takes part in the development of the first model of Freidenberg’s automatic telephone exchange. In 1893, together with the physicist Nikolai Liubimov, he invents the intermittent mechanism “snail”, which is used for stroboscope upgrade. the operation principle of this mechanism becomes serves as the basis for the kinetoscope. In January 1894, during the IX conference of the Society of Nature Researchers and Physicians of the Russian Empire, Timchenko uses the mechanism to produce an image on a screen being ahead of West-European inventors, such as Jean Louis Lumiere, Georges Demenÿ, and Max Skladanowsky. the conference takes place a year before the emergence of cinema in Europe.

Tolok receives his higher education at the School of Physics and Mathematics of Dnipropetrovsk State University, and the the School of Physics and Mathematics of Kharkiv State University.

In 1952-1987 Tolok works at Kharkiv Institute of Physics and Technology, since 1988 — heads a laboratory at Kharkiv State University. In 1973-1987 he is a permanent member of the Soviet-American Coordination Commission on Thermonuclear Energy.

Tolok scientific interest cover physics and technology of accelerators, plasma physics. Tolok is a corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR, Merited Science Worker of Ukraine. He supervises the development and implementation of a number of thermonuclear facilities. Tolok is author of about 200 scientific works, 18 inventions and patents.

Born in Solyonoe village in Kharkiv region, Tugan-Baranovsky receives his higher education at the School of Physics and Mathematics of Kharkiv University. Interested in social sciences, he simultaneously takes an external degree at the School of Law of the University. He takes an internship in Great Britain. the scientist works at St. Petersburg University, St. Petersburg Polytechnic Institute, St. Petersburg Commercial Institute, and the Bestuzhev Courses in St. Petersburg. After the graduation he is on probation in Great Britain.

On his return to Ukraine in 1917, Tugan-Baranovsky takes part in civil and political life. In August-September 1917 he is appointed Secretary General of the Central Rada, and in 1919 — Economic Adviser to the Ukrainian Directory. Tugan-Baranovsky is one of the founders of the Ukrainian State University in Kyiv, and the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences. He works as an editor in the periodical Ukrainian Cooperation, heads the Society of Ukrainian Economists, participates in organization of All-Ukrainian cooperative associations.

Tugan-Baranovsky is author of about 140 widely known scientific works on economic science and its history, theory and practice of cooperative movement. Some of his works are translated into European languages.

Turczanínow receives his higher education at the Mathematics Division of Kharkiv University.

Turczanínow has a considerable botanical collection.

Upon completion of his civil service he moves to Kharkiv where he works as a professor of botany, and a keeper of the botanical collection at Kharkiv University. In 1857 he is awarded Demidov Prize of the Academy of Sciences (for his work in two volumes Plants of Baikal-Dauriya).

Turczanínow’s works are known among botanists and natural scientists not only from Russia, but also from Europe. His studies cover the flora of China, Japan, Mexico, Australia, and other countries; he describes more than 100 new genera of plants, and more than 1,000 new species of plants. Since 1830 he is a corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences. He is also elected Honorary Member of Kharkiv University.

Ubijvovk receives her higher education at the Division of Astronomy of the School of Physics and Mathematics of Kharkiv University. In 1941 she returns to Poltava to get under German occupation.

During the Great Patriotic War Ubijvovk organizes a underground komsomol youth organization Unbroken Poltavchanka comprising 20 young men and women. They carry out anti-Hitler propaganda among the locals, get in contact with guerrilla bands, perform acts of sabotage. In 1942 all the most active organization participants, including Elena Ubijvovk, are arrested by the Nazi. On March 26, 1926, after severe torturing, Ubijvovk and five other organization members are shot to death.

On the 20th anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War Ubijvovk is posthumously awarded the Hero of the Soviet Union.

Streets in Poltava and Kharkiv are named after her. One of the minor planets discovered in 1974 also bears her name.

Usikov receives his higher education at Kharkiv Institute of Public Education. In 1936-1955 he works at Kharkiv Institute of Physics and Technology, since 1955 — at the Institute of Radio Physics and Electronics of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR.

Usikov’s scientific works are devoted to development of pulsed magnetron generators of decimeter and millimeter radio waves, and their application in radiolocation, studies of radio wave absorption and scatter, discovery of new methods in radiotechnics, particularly in radio communication. Usikov designs a radio-echo method of power cable fault localization, proposes and develops the idea of using the lens effect of the Earth ionosphere to create refractory type radio telescopes.

He is awarded the Order of Lenin, the Order of the October Revolution, and the State Prize of the Ukrainian SSR.

Ushakov is born in Novaya Tavolzhanka village (now Belgorod oblast, Russian Federation). He participates in the Great Patriotic War, takes part in the Battle of Kursk, and the Third Battle of Kharkiv (August, 1943). On October 26, 1943 Ushakov is awarded the Hero of the Soviet Union.

After demobilization, at the end of 1946, he is enrolled in the Division of Journalism of the School of Philology of Kharkiv University, and upon graduation enrolls in a PhD program. He works as a lecturer at the University for 30 years, is Director of the Central Scientific Library.

Feinberg receives his higher education at the School of Physics and Mathematics of Kharkiv University. Since 1946 he works at Kharkiv Institute of Physics and Technology, and in 1949-1972 — at Kharkiv State University.

Feinberg’s scientific works are devoted to accelerator physics and technology, plasma physics, and physics of controlled thermonuclear fusion. In 1947 he invents linear plasma betatron, grounds the theory of linear accelerators on the traveling wave, proposes new acceleration methods. Feinberg is one of the authors to have discovered beam instability of plasma and turbulent heating. He is the one to have laid the foundation of relative and non-relative plasma electronics.

Feinberg is father of the scientific school of physics and technology of linear accelerators and plasma electronics.

Feinberg is a corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR, Merited Science Worker of Ukraine, holder of the State Prize of Ukraine, Order of Merit (I Class), and the Order of Merit (III Class).

Fesenkov receives his higher education at Kharkiv University. He defends his Doctor of Science thesis in Sorbonne in 1914. In 1915-1920 he gives lectures at Kharkiv University, then at the Polytechnic Institute, and the Pedagogical Institute in Novocherkassk.

In 1923 Fesenkov founds the Russian Astrophysical Institute, and heads it till 1931. the scientist also founds the Astrophysical Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the Kazakh SSR, is the Head of the Astronomical Council of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, and the Committee of Meteorites of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. He initiates publishing of the Astronomical Journal.

Fesenkov is a corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, academician of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, academician of the Academy of Sciences of the Kazakh SSR. He is one of the founders of astrophysics in the USSR. Fesenkov’s scientific works are devoted to atmosphere, optics, astrophysics, and cosmogony. He is one of the first researchers to have taken interest in photometry of zodiacal light, developed the dynamic theory of this phenomenon, and constructed a photometer. He is also the author of the hypothesis of stellar corpuscular radiation and formation of stars from the interstellar gas and dust medium. the scientist develops the criterion the tidal stability of celestial bodies, grounds the conclusion that higher forms of plants are impossible on Mars and other planets, proposes optical methods for probing the top layers of atmosphere.

Fesenkov is awarded three Orders of Lenin, the Order of the Red Banner of Labor, and medals.

Frantsevich receives his higher education at the School of Chemistry, and the School of Physics and Mathematics of Kharkiv University. In 1928-1929 he works at the Ukrainian Institute for Measures and Instruments, and at the Institute of Metals. Since 1934 he is a professor at Kharkiv University, and the Head of the Department of Physical Chemistry.

In 1937-1941 the scientist heads a section in Kharkiv Research Institute of Chemistry at Kharkiv University. Later he works at the Institute of Ferrous Metallurgy of the Academy of Science of Ukraine, and at Kyiv State University. In 1955 he organizes the Institute of Metal Ceramics and Special Alloys at the Academy of sc iences of the Ukrainian SSR. He is the Editor-in-Chief of the journal Powder Metallurgy.

Frantsevich is awarded the State Prize of the Ukrainian SSR, Sobolevsky Prize of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, the Prize of the Council of Ministers of the USSR, holder of the title of Hero of Socialist Labor.

Frantsevich’s scientific interests cover physical and chemical analysis, metal science, and powder metallurgy. Frantsevich is author of more than 600 articles and monographs, has more than 60 certificates of authorship, and 14 patents.

Khalansky is born in Rahovets village (now Kursk oblast, Russian Federation). He studies at Belgorod Theological Seminary, graduates from the School of History and Philology of Kharkiv University. Upon graduation he teaches at gymnasia of Belgorod and Kharkiv. Since 1889 he works as a privat-docent, then as a professor at Kharkiv University where in 1895 he defends his doctoral thesis.

Khalansky’s most significant works are devoted to Slavonic folklore, Russian dialectology, and literary language, as well as Russian poetry. the scholar is the author of the Experience of History of Kharkiv Imperial University drawn up to mark the centenary of Kharkiv University foundation.

Hâjdeu receives his higher education at the School of Law of Kharkiv University. This is when he gets to know Ukrainian culture more closely.

Upon graduation he returns to his native land in Bessarabia where he teaches mathematics, logic, French, and Russian. Later he takes up legal practice. His bold expressions in courts often result in persecution from the Tsar administration.

Hâjdeu’s works are colored with Moldavian patriotism. His numerous poems glorify the places related to the notable events, glorious and sad pages of the history of Moldova and Ukraine.

As a enthusiastic participant of Izmail Sreznevsky’s philological society, Hâjdeu collects and studies Ukrainian and Moldavian folklore.

Hâjdeu is one of the first researchers of Gregory Skovoroda’s works. In 1870 he is elected Honorary Member of the Romanian Academy of Sciences.

Chizhov is born in Artynov village (now Omsk oblast, Russian Federation). He finishes secondary school and the school of teachers of primary classes.

In August 1941 Chizhov joins the Red Army. He fights at the Central and First Belorussian Fronts, participates in the Battle of Kursk, and in the liberation of Belarus. He is awarded the medal “For Combat Services”, the Order of Lenin, the medal “Golden Star”, and the title of the Hero of the Soviet Union (1994).

In 1954 Chizhov graduates from the School of History of Kharkiv State University, works as a school principal in Kremenchuk.

Chizhov is also awarded the Order of the Patriotic War (I Class), the Order of the Patriotic War (II class), and medals.

Chichibabin studies at the School of History, and the School of Philology of Kharkiv University, but is mobilized to participate in the Great Patriotic War. In 1945 he is demobilized and decided to resume his training at the the School of Philology. Yet, he is not meant to finish his higher education for in June 1946 he is repressed and sentenced to five years in prison camps for anti-soviet propaganda.

In 1951 Chichivabin returns to Kharkiv where he works as an accountant. His first works are published in 1958. His poetry portrays the tragic path of society, reflect internal freedom, the moral search and responsibility of a person before God. His works harmoniously combine philosophical, civil, love and landscape lyrics.

In 1990 he is awarded the State Prize of the USSR for his book Bells (Kolokola), in 1993 — Andrei Sakharov Prize for Writer’s Civic Courage. the street in Kharkiv where the poet used to live is named after him.

Shevelov receives his higher education at Kharkiv Institute of Public Education. He works as a lecturer, then as an associate professor at the Ukrainian Institute of Journalism, and Kharkiv University.

Since 1946 Shevelov is a professor of the Ukrainian Free University in Munich. In 1950 he moves to the USA where he works as a professor at Harvard University, and Columbia University. He is elected President of the Ukrainian Free Academy of Sciences in New-York, and since 1989 he is the Honorary President of the Ukrainian Free Academy of Sciences.

Shevelov is author of numerous works on the history of Ukrainian language studies (morphology, syntax, lexicology), comparative analysis of the Ukrainian and other Slavonic languages.

Born in Kharkiv, Shovkoplyas receives his higher education at Kharkiv Institute of Public Education. His first works are published when he is still a student. In 1930s he becomes a well-known writer. He is author of novels, novellas, books of sketches devoted to electrification in the USSR. His novel Engineers is best known. Shovkoplyas also writes adventure short stories.

Since 1934 Shovkoplyas is a member of the Union of Writers of the USSR. He holdsthe positions of Head of the Department of Journalism of Kharkiv University, Chairman of the Board of Kharkiv Branch of the Union of Writers of the Ukrainian SSR, Editor-in-Chief of the journal Prapor.

Shchogolev receives his higher education at the Division of History and Philology of the School of Philosophy of Kharkiv University. In 1848, upon graduation, he works as an officer.

1876-1877 are the most fruitful years in the poet’s creative activity. These are the years when most of his poems are written. Shchogolev’s works inspire to deeply comprehend the past while preserving the national traditions. the poet convincingly portrays the life of people, their fate in the historical perspective, reveals the interrelation between the social life and the physical world of existence. Shchogolev’s numerous poems have become folk songs.

Born in Solntsevka village (now Borisovka village, Kharkiv oblast), Yavornytsky receives his higher education at the School of History and Philology of Kharkiv University. Upon graduation he stays at the University to prepare for his professorship.

In 1885 Yavornytsky moves to St. Petersburg, in 1892 he is sent to Tashkent for his political unreliability. In 1895, after the exile, he moves to Warsaw.

In 1902 he defends his thesis at Kazan University. the same year he moves to Ekaterinoslav, and begins to work as the Director of the Museum of Antiquities of Ekaterinoslav Governorate.

In 1925-1929 the scientist is the Head of the Department of Ukrainian Studies, and the Head of the Section of History of the Academy of Sciences of Ukraine in Dnipropetrovsk. Since 1924 he is a corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR, since 1929 — an academician of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR.

Yavornytsky is one of the most known researchers of history of the Zaporizhian Sich. Significant is his contribution to the development of historical area studies. Yavornytsky is one of the first in Ukraine to organize museology, and have extensive ethnographic and folklore material. He is also a pioneer in discovering and studying Petrikov ornamental painting known all over the world.
